In 1996, we began using the VHS video tape about Jake and Herschel in our preschool classrooms as an enhancement to the nutrition lesson for our students. The children loved the story. They were especially fond of the part about Herschel's favorite food being peanut butter. They also loved all of the different kinds of vegetables that you need to eat to grow up healthy and strong.
In 2010, we expanded our program to include not only School Readiness but Head Start students as well and wanted to continue using this as part of our nutrition program but needed a broader access to the material. To find the book in print, I placed a call to George Collie. Needless to say, I had no idea what our conversation would lead to but we had the first copy of "Where's the Peanut Butter?" in print.
This past school year, we used the book as part of our nutrition lesson and also purchased a copy of the book for each of our classrooms, so that all 1600 preschool students could enjoy the story over and over again. We also purchased a rabbit puppet to use with the story and the children just love it. They continue to talk about Herschel and his friends and all of the good choices they make when it comes to eating healthy foods.
